Labelling and Marking Museum Objects

This session will look at why numbering is important and how it ties in with Spectrum procedures, as well as offering a practical session covering what you need and giving an opportunity to practice on a variety of objects.

Numbering, marking and labelling museum objects are Spectrum requirements but often they can be intimidating.

The morning session, led by Anna Rhodes, will look at why numbering is important and how it ties in with Spectrum procedures. It will cover different types of numbers including object entry numbers, acquisition numbers, temporary numbers, object exit numbers and loan numbers, and will also include discussions around dealing with historic numbering issues and renumbering collections.

The afternoon will be led by Anita Hollinshead who will build on discussions from the morning, leading attendees in a practical session which will will explore the theory and practice around marking a museum collection.

  • Understand the Spectrum requirements for numbering.

  • Know how and when to use numbering to support museum documentation and collections management activities.

  • Know where to find further relevant guidance.

  • Learn why numbering is important and how numbering fits into the Spectrum procedures and Accreditation standard.

  • Understand the materials needed for marking a variety of objects.

  • Have learned the correct methods of marking different materials.

All materials for the afternoon session will be provided by Anita however if attendees have objects they would like to bring along from their organisations to mark, they are welcome to.

About the trainer

Anna Rhodes is an Outreach Officer for Collections Trust. She works to to support museums and museum professionals across the UK with museum Accreditation, including training and support in using applying the Spectrum standard for collections management.

Collections Trust is an Investment Principal Support Organisation (IPSO) that delivers support across England in partnership with Museum Development (MD), funded by ACE, to support museum Accreditation.

Anita Hollinshead is a freelance museum consultant, specialising in collections care and development, funding bids, project management, consultation, audience development and community engagement.

Please note this venue does not have catering facilities on the day of training so whilst refreshments will be provided, please bring a packed lunch or be prepared for a short walk into Ilkeston where there are a variety of places to purchase food.

Who should attend?

Suitable for those working in collections care and management, including museum staff, volunteers and trustees.

Maximum two delegates per organisation. Priority will be given to delegates from non-NPO and non-National museums in the Midlands which are Accredited or officially Working Towards Accreditation.

This event will be held at Erewash Museum. The Hayloft where the event will take place is accessible by lift.
