Rethinking Cataloguing

Upright piano and a large drum as part of a museum display.

This Rethinking Cataloguing session will be delivered as part of Museum Development Midlands Hidden Narrative programme.

In this session, Collections Trust will introduce the latest version of the Spectrum Cataloguing procedure (Spectrum 5.1).

Using the new procedure as the framework for the session we will discuss:

  • Historical and cultural biases embedded in museum documentation.

  • How to deal with outdated and offensive terminology.

  • How to record multiple perspectives.

  • Making documentation retrievable and relevant for the needs of a range of users.

By the end of the session, attendees will:

  • How to understand and apply the Spectrum Cataloguing procedure.

  • What changes have been made to the Cataloguing procedure and why.

  • How to take a critical approach to cataloguing, to make it a more open, ongoing process.

  • How to think about internal and external users.

  • Where to find more information and guidance.

Before the session we ask attendees to:

  • Read the revised Spectrum Cataloguing procedure - https://collectionstrust.org.uk/spectrum/primary-procedures/cataloguing-spectrum-5-0-primary-procedures/

  • Think about your organisation’s approach to cataloguing, in the context of this revised procedure.

  • Familiarise yourself with your organisation’s documentation policy and Cataloguing procedure. You might also find it useful to have these available to refer to during the session.

  • Please ensure you have a working microphone to ensure you can participate in discussions.

There will be opportunities to discuss with colleagues and ask questions throughout, as well as signposting to further guidance.

This event is aimed at beginners or those in need of a refresh. You do not need any prior experience of Spectrum to attend. These sessions have been designed as standalone events so you do not need to attend every session in the series to benefit.
