The 2026 Annual Museum Survey (AMS) results have now been published, providing valuable insight into the health, resilience and challenges facing museums across England.
This year's findings highlight the continued importance of local authority support, growth in museum income alongside rising expenditure, changing volunteering trends, and significant regional differences in visitor numbers, funding and operating models. The survey also demonstrates the diversity of museums across the country and provides an increasingly important evidence base for future planning, policy development and investment.
Museums in the Midlands continue to make an important contribution to the sector, with the report highlighting regional trends in areas such as capital investment, project funding and museum operations.
